Paula Dória
Mezzo-Soprano

Portuguese mezzo-soprano Paula Dória, received her Master's in Music from Indiana University/School of Music in Bloomington in 1998 and is currently a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at the Mason Gross School of the Arts (New Brunswick) as a recipient of the Ministério da Ciencia e Tecnologia- Programa Praxis XXI in Portugal.

As a soloist, she has performed in some European cities as well as in the U.S, including the S. Carlos Opera Theater in Lisbon and the Coliseu in Porto, Portugal, the Manheim Schloss Museum in Germany, the Lincoln Center/Avery Fisher Hall and the Carnegie Weill Hall in New York City.
Her operatic roles include Carmen and Mercedes in Carmen, Meg Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Marcellina and Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro, Inez in Il Trovatore, Madame de Croissy (Old Prioress) in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Madame Larina in Eugene Onegin. She also premiered the role of Joana in the contemporary opera by Portuguese composers Carlos Azevedo and Fernando Lapa, A Demolição, as well as the role of Ricarda in Freitas Branco's A Igreja do Mar at the S.Carlos Opera Theater in 2002. Ms.Dória has also served as a young artist at the Dicapo Opera in NY, singing Inez during the 2000 East Coast tour for the National Lyric Opera.
Orchestral and oratorio works include performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and the Choral Fantasy, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Mozart's Requiem, Coronation Mass, Vesperae di Domenica K321 and Missa Brevis RV 194, Handel's Messiah, Bach's Magnificatt and Liszt's Via Crucis (broadcast for the Portuguese Public Television - R.T.P), among others.

Master-classes and private coachings include names as Rudolf Knoll, Gundula Janowitz, Vera Rozca, Suzanne Danco, Virginia Zeani, Klara Barlow, Jerome Hines, Charles Reicker, Michael Warren, Enza Ferrari, Nico Castel and Velia Botti.

Ms. Dória was a finalist of the Search for a Star Pops competition (1997) in Indianapolis, IN where she sang conducted by Marvin Hamlisch. She was the 2003 Bellini International Vocal Competition winner as "Best Chamber Music Singer" that took place in Italy, singing at Carnegie Weill Hall in February 2004 in virtue of this prize. Her discography includes a XX Century Portuguese music recording with works of the contemporary Portuguese composers Jorge Peixinho and Lopes Graça with Grupo de Música Vocal Contemporânea.
Fluent in Portuguese (native), Spanish, French and English, Ms.Dória also holds a master's degree in Philosophy and Education from the Universidade do Porto/Portugal and has extensive teaching experience in Voice and Philosophy.

She is affiliated with Indiana Alumni Association, Opera America, The College Music Society and is an active performing member of the Professional Women Singers Association of New York since 2002.
