Young
Russian soprano Mlada Hudoley has been creating quite a sensation
in many important opera houses throughout Europe and the United
States. Her interpretations of the roles of Sieglinde in
Die Walküre with The Washington
National Opera and Baden-Baden, and Fevronia in The
Invisible City of Kitezh at
the Metropolitan Opera House received glowing reviews in The New
York Times, Opera News, and the Washington Post. She is
a regular member of the Mariinsky Theatre and one of Maestro Valery
Gergiev’s favorite artists.
Ms.
Hudoley was born in Moscow, and graduated from the opera faculty
of the Russian Theatrical Academy in 1996. She was a prize-winner
at the All-Russian Bach Competition of Young Singers in 1994,
a diploma-winner at the International Competition in Rome in 1997,
and a Bayreuth scholarship student of the International Wagner
Society in 1998.
In
1998 she made her debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in the role of
Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer. Other roles she has sung there include Renata in The Fiery Angel,
Salome, Ariadne, Donna Elvira
and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Sieglinde
in Die Walküre, Gutrune
in Götterdämmerung, Aida, Lady
Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth, Abigaille
in Nabucco, Fevronia in The Invisible City of Kitezh, and Norma.
Her
repertoire also includes the Verdi Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, which she has sung at Covent Garden, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s
Mlada, which she
has sung at the Concertgebouw.
She
has also performed many of these roles on tour with the Mariinsky
Theatre in such cities as London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing,
Tel-Aviv, Melbourne, Warsaw, and Baden-Baden.
Placido
Domingo discovered Ms. Hudoley when she sang Sieglinde to his
Siegmund in Die Walküre at the White Nights Festival
several seasons ago. He then invited her to repeat that role with
him at the Washington National Opera in November 2003. He also
invited her to sing Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer
with the Los Angeles Opera two seasons ago.
Recent
engagements have also included Lisa in Pique Dame in
Bordeaux, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in
Lisbon, Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer in
Palermo, and Abigaille in Nabucco in
Warsaw. Upcoming engagements include Norma in
St.
Gallen, Switzerland, Sancta Susanna and Pique Dame at Teatro alla Scala, Sieglinde in Die Walküre at the Japan Festival, Senta in Der Fliegende
Holländer inTorino, Manon
Lescaut in Tel Aviv, and Sieglinde
in Die Walküre at
the Metropolitan Opera House with Valery Gergiev and the Kirov.
