“The public’s
overwhelming consensus was easily won by the young American soprano
Liesl Odenweller, who possesses an impressively effortless and
secure technique. This was evident particularly in her interpretation
of Gilda in Rigoletto, a role that is perfect for her vocal abilities,
which allow her to soar in impressive pyrotechnics with great
agility and ease even in the highest register.” -- Il Gazzettino
di Venezia, February 1999
Lyric soprano
Liesl Odenweller enjoys a busy career in her native United States
and in Europe. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants,
including the Liederkranz Prize in the US, the International Bellini
Prize, and the Italian “Il Virtuoso” Prize. Now a
resident of Italy, she has received much acclaim for her performances
as Violetta in La traviata in several
European and American theaters and has enjoyed great success as
Gilda, Konstanze, Marguerite
Faust, and Adina. She can effortlessly navigate
the pyrotechnics of the Queen of the Night as
well as the lyrical pathos of Pamina.
Recent opera
engagements include First Knappe and Blumenmädchen
Parsifal and First Maid Daphne
at Teatro La Fenice. For La Fenice she has also sung Kate
Pinkerton Madama Butterfly, and covered Helena
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2004 she made her
début as Bastienne Bastien und Bastienne
at Vicenza’s historic Teatro Olimpico in a joint production
of La Fenice and the Settimane Musicali all’Olimpico that
was also broadcast on Italian Radio.
Major concert
engagements have included her Carnegie Hall début in the
Poulenc Gloria and the Bach Magnificat in 2004.
Also in 2004, she had the honor of being selected by the Teatro
La Fenice as soloist in the Pergolesi Stabat Mater, performed
in memory of Maestro Marcello Viotti. In 2005 she returned to
Riccardo Chailly’s Orchestra Verdi di Milano to sing the
Mozart Requiem and Szymanovsky Stabat Mater,
having sung Brahms Requiem there in 2002 under Romano
Gandolfi. Most recently she sang the Fauré Requiem
at the opening of the Festival of La Ciotat and the Eglise de
la Madeleine in Paris.
Miss Odenweller
has been particularly acclaimed for her interpretations of the
recital repertoire of Rossini, Debussy, Strauss, Verdi, Mozart,
and Tosti. She made her Lincoln Center début at Avery Fisher
Hall in 1997 and her London recital début in 2003.
Miss Odenweller’s
recording début CD was “This Son So Young,”
issued on the Tower Hill label. She is presently working on a
disc of Venetian songs, entitled “Girl in a Gondola”.
In addition
to being featured in performance on Italian television and radio,
one of her more interesting opportunities to date was a small
part in the film Year Of The Gun, starring Andrew McCarthy
and Sharon Stone and directed by John Frankenheimer.
Miss Odenweller’s
forthcoming engagements include First Lady in
Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro La Fenice, Beatrice
in Beatrice Di Tenda, Cleopatra Giulio
Cesare, Queen of the Night The Magic
Flute, Gilda Rigoletto, Lucia
Lucia di Lammermoor, Konstanze Die
Entführung aus dem Serail, and Juliette
Romeo et Juliette, and symphonic concerts and
recitals in Milan, Paris, London, Venice, Verona, Rome, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, and New York.
