Young American
baritone James J. Rollins debuted at six regional opera companies
this past year to critical acclaim. Recent performances include
Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette (Opera North), which
was said to have "added spirited notes of courage, wit and
humor, all delivered with expressive acting and a crystal clear
baritone." (Claremont Eagle Times). "Rollins added a
creepy and psychotic persona to Pish-Tush" in The Mikado
(Deer Valley Music Festival), said The Deseret News. In DuPage
Opera Theater's production of Faust, "Rollins as
Valentin was also stellar in his work." (Oak Park Newspaper).
Other performances this year include Starveling in A Midsummer
Night's Dream (Utah Symphony and Opera), Malatesta in the
touring production of Don Pasquale (Utah Symphony and
Opera), and the title character in Don Giovanni (Capitol
Opera Raleigh). Mr. Rollins was recently invited back to Utah
Opera to workshop the role of Noah in Ricky Ian Gordon's new opera
The Grapes of Wrath with the composer. Upcoming performances
include Gregorio in Roméo et Juliette (Utah Symphony
and Opera), and Motorcycle Cop in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking
(Baltimore Opera-debut).
Previous performance credits include Masetto in Don Giovanni,
Angelotti in Tosca, Schaunard and Marcello in La
Bohème, Silvano in Un Ballo in Maschera,
the Learned Judge in Trial by Jury, Samuel in Pirates
of Penzance, Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors,
and the Guitar Player in The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
with such companies as Greensboro Opera, Opera Festival of New
Jersey, Wildwood Festival of Performing Arts, and Teatro di Urbania,
Italy. In addition, Mr. Rollins was the baritone soloist in the
Five Mystical Songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams both at
Durham Cathedral in England and with the Summer Music Festival
in Blowing Rock, NC.
This year,
Mr. Rollins was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera
Competition, and a winner in the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition,
the New York Singing Teacher's Association David Adams Art Song
Competition, and the district and regional National Association
of Teachers of Singing Artist Award (NATSAA). Additionally, he
completed the Utah Opera Studio Ensemble Program and the Apprenticeship
program at Opera North.
