Gerardo Antonio Ramos
holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice Performance with Opera
Emphasis from the University of Texas at Austin where he studied
with the internationally renowned and Metropolitan Opera singer
tenor William Lewis. He received his MM in Opera Performance at
the University of Texas at Austin and his BM in Music Education
at the University of Texas at El Paso under the instruction of
Dr. Hugh Cardon. He recently won an encouragement award as semifinalist
in the International Vocal Competition Gerda Lissner International
Competition and the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, as well
as several local competitions including El Paso Opera Young Artist
Program, El Paso Symphony Guild, La Voz Hispana, and NATS.
Dr. Ramos is a member
of the Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Chancellor's List Honor
Societies. Also, he was a recipient of the Dr. and Mrs. Ernest
C. Butler Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Opera, Barbara Smith
Conrad Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Fine Arts, and the
Graduate Enrichment Fellowship.
In 1995,
Gerardo started singing with El Paso Opera Chorus and El Paso
Chamber Choir where he sang his first professional role in Romeo
et Juliette as Benvolio in 2000. In 2001, he participated in the
AAMA (Austrian American Mozart Academy) program in Eine Nacht
in Venedig as Der Herzog. From 2002 to 2006, he performed L'Elisir
d'Amore as Nemorino (2002), Gianni Schicchi as Rinuccio (2003
and in 2006 for the University of Texas at El Paso), Die Zauberflöte
as Tamino, La Tentación de San Antonio as Arrio, Sabelio,
and Voz de Tenor (2004), L'Incoronazione di Poppea as Primo Soldato
and Lucano (2004), Eugene Onegin as Lenski (2004), La Tragédie
de Carmen as Don José (2005), a concert version of Amnon
und Tamar as Amnon (2005), La Vida Breve as Una Voz en la Fragua
and Una Voz (2005), and L'enfant Prodigue as Azaël (2006)
for the International Debussy Conference at the Butler Opera Center.
In 2007 covered the role of Don José for Tulsa Opera. His
recent engagements have been in La Tragédie de Carmen as
Don José in Sao Paulo, Brazil and San José, Costa
Rica National Opera in 2008 and Tosca as Mario Cavaradossi for
Amarillo Opera in 2009.
In addition to his
operatic repertoire, Gerardo Ramos has also performed in numerous
Zarzuela concerts and some productions with the Zarzuela at El
Paso such as La Gran Vía as Rata Primero (1998), Agua Azucarillos
y Aguardiente as Serafín (1999), El Duo de la Africana
covering the role of Guissepini (2001), and Luisa Fernanda as
Javier as a Guest Artist for Tulsa Opera (2007). His concert repertoire
includes Mozart's Krönungsmesse KV 317, Missa Brevis in C,
Spatzenmesse KV 220, Requiem KV 626, Ariel Ramirez's Misa Criolla
and Navidad Nuestra, and Handel's Messiah.
